Most people know this portion of scripture is about the life of Joseph. Although we can learn much from his life and devotion to God, there is also much we can gain from the story of Judah tucked away in those same scriptures. Judah started out as a man who was lost in worldly desires but eventually had his life turned around into a perfect picture of God's wonderful redemption.

Three themes that are weaved together in John's letter are truth, love and obedience. By believing the truth in Christ and in the Word we are saved. The evidence of our salvation is love and the evidence of love is obedience. Love and obedience are strengthened as we grow in our knowledge of truth. The more we love Jesus who is truth, the more we will love others.

This passage reminds us, in our seemingly impossible situations, to not focus on what we lack but to look at Who we have. Jesus is in our midst, just as He was in the midst of His disciples and the five thousand hungry men plus many more. He took the little amount of food they had, blessed and multiplied it, all were fed and satisfied, not to mention there were plenty of leftovers. Little is much with God, believe it!

We will not be able to live that level of commitment if we stay on our "buts" (excuses). Choose to be courageous, have some guts and watch what God will do in and through you.

In this passage Moses gave God's people two options, you can choose life and blessing or death and destruction. The quality of our life is not determined by the breaks we get in this life but by the choices we make. If we choose Jesus and His ways we will choose life and blessing.

Elijah sets the example for us as one who faithfully served and walked with God to the very end. He provides encouragement to those of us who know that when we leave this earthly place, we will one day be in our heavenly home with our Lord. The question is, what are we doing in the meantime? Hopefully, as Elijah, we will resolve to keep serving Him and walking in faith until He takes us home to be with Him.
