We need to appreciate the gifts we have been given by the Holy Spirit and realize the importance of using them for the benefit of others. Equally, when we don't use our gifts our brothers and sisters will suffer, God will not receive the glory He deserves and the advancement of His Kingdom will be hindered.

As members of Christ's Body we have each been given spiritual gifts as the Holy Spirit has determined.  Every gift is essential and important for the purpose of edifying the Body and bringing glory to the Lord. How has God gifted you and are you using what He has given you to bless others?

In this portion of Scripture the Apostle Paul corrects and instructs the Corinthian believers regarding their improper behavior when they gathered together for fellowship and partaking of the Lord's Table.  He speaks to them of the essence of what it means to be a community of believers. When one member suffers, the whole community suffers. When one has been blessed to help another it is to empower the entire body of Christ.  Jesus is saying through Paul, "This is what I want you to do in remembering Me." "This is how you honor Me."

Even though fashion and style may be culturally conditioned, as Christians we must be mindful of what our outward appearance can communicate. We should willingly adapt our styles to glorify God. Since others are watching us and forming opinions about us, we should make sure that what they see on the outside is a reflection of Jesus on the inside of us.

The Apostle Paul urges believers of his day to flee idolatry and run to God. His message is a warning to us today to do the same. Our idols may not be the same as in Paul's day but anything or person that has our hearts and worship will lead us away from the only One who deserves our worship.

In these first 13 verses Paul is exhorting the Corinthian believers that they have been set free by Christ and they are not to abuse that liberty by giving into their lusts. He retells them of the history of their ancestors in Numbers 11 and how they grumbled and complained about what the Lord had provided for them in the way of manna. They were lusting for meat and wanted to return to Egypt. Paul warns them that having a heart that is not satisfied with want God has given will end up empty, weak and lacking.

As believers in Jesus we have been given the privilege of freedom. However, with our freedom comes the responsibility to  share the gospel and to build one another up in the faith. This calls us to live humbly and sacrificially, to set aside our rights for the sake of others.

The Apostle Paul has encouraged the Corinthian believers to lay down their personal freedoms so that others won't stumble. Now here in chapter nine he uses himself as an example of what he has been talking about, what it means and what it looks like to give up his personal freedoms for the sake of the Gospel and for others.
